1951

Established in the Napier region on July 12, 1951.

Mayor Mr. Spriggs, called a public meeting at the City Council Chambers and a group of 48 parents attended and shared their views on the need for kindergartens in the Napier area and went on to work for the kindergarten movement for several years.  

End of 1951- the Association became an incorporated Society.

Within 18 months, two kindergartens were established in temporary premises in the suburbs of Marewa and Port Ahuriri.

1956

Marewa was the first Kindergarten to open in a permanent location in 1956 following what is described as a ‘vigorous programme of fundraising’ and with this opening came greater public awareness and support for the movement.

1957

Community fundraising continued and in 1957, the Ahuriri Kindergarten moved to the other side of the hill to serve a greater areas more conveniently and took the name “Carlyle Kindergarten”.

Maraenui, Taradale and Onekawa for further suburbs that were being explored.

1962

Taradale Kindergarten was built and the Association was named Napier and Taradale Kindergarten Association. 

1964

Onekawa Kindergarten opened.

1971

Primai Kindergarten opened.

1973

Bette Christie Kindergarten, named after mrs Christie who had supported the fundraising and build.

1975

Greenmeadows kindergarten opened, thanks to the overwhelming support of the Taradale- Greenmeadows business men and service clubs of the area.


Permission was given to build Tamatea Kindergarten.

1977

Wycliffe Nga Tamariki opened.

1978

In June Wharerangi opened and in July Riversdale Kindergarten opened- now known as Taradale East.

1980

The Eskview Establishment Committee was elected and fundraising commenced for the kindergarten on Petane Road.

Our Extended Kindergartens will be open from Monday 5 January 2026 to Tuesday 22 December 2026.
We are open throughout school term breaks and closed on public holidays, as well as one week in July for our Kaiako-only week.
