Understanding 20 Hours ECE (Easy Guide for Parents) Free Early Childhood Education for 3–5 Year Olds
All tamariki aged 3, 4, and 5 can receive up to 20 hours per week of free early childhood education (ECE).
This is provided by the government — you just need to attest (confirm) that your child is using their 20 Hours ECE with us.
For Tamariki Aged 3, 4 & 5
If you attest all 20 Hours ECE to our kindergarten
- Your child can attend up to 30 hours per week at no cost
(as long as it’s a 6-hour-per-day kindergarten)
- We simply suggest a voluntary $10 per week Family Donation (optional).
If you split the 20 Hours ECE with another provider
If some of the 20 hours are used elsewhere, any extra hours your child attends with us cost:
$5 per hour for hours not covered by the funding.
For 2-Year-Olds
We subsidise fees for 2-year-olds to make attendance more affordable.
Your cost:
- $5 per hour for the first 9 hours per week
- All hours after the first 9 are free
(Example: attending 30 hours per week = $45 total)
Voluntary Family Donation
If your child attends more than 20 hours and you allocate all of your 20 ECE hours to kindergarten, or your child attends less than 20 hours but their attendance is covered in full by 20 hours ECE, there is no fee charged. We do however have a $10 per week voluntary family donation.
Your donation helps support the wonderful work your teaching team do in your kindergarten (resources, excursions).
Payment of the family donation is voluntary, if you cannot pay the full amount, please just pay what you can, your child will not be excluded from kindergarten if you do not pay.
As we are a registered not-for profit charity, your donations qualify for a tax rebate of 33.33%.
Invoices
We invoice once a term, in advance. On the invoice you’ll see your child’s unique identifier (please use this when making payments) and our bank account details.
No Extra Costs
Our kindergartens do not charge optional or hidden fees – all excursions and trips are free.
Financial Support - WINZ Childcare Subsidy
You may be able to get help paying fees through the WINZ Childcare Subsidy
Hours
To accommodate the varying needs of families, all of our kindergartens offer 6-hour sessions.
Wharerangi Kindergarten also offers a shorter morning session. All children arrive together in the morning; younger children attend the morning session, while older children remain for the full 6-hour session.
